Minorca has a population of 67,000 inhabitants, concentrated in the eight municipalities in which it is divided. These are: Maó, the administrative capital of the island, Ciutadella, the former capital, Alaior, Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Es Castell, Sant Lluís and Es Migjorn Gran.

There are other urban centres, namely Sant Climent, Llucmaçanes and Fornells. The first two are in the municipal area of Maó and the third is in the municipal area of Es Mercadal. Maó, in the east, and Ciutadella in the west are the two most populated towns on the island.
